love + discipline = devotion
So, no, I don't like discipline much.
Then I heard blogger Alexander Franzen say that discipline plus love equals devotion. Now that feels better!
I like devotion. It's a warm word, soft and round without the sharp edges that discipline has. A kinder, gentler discipline. Devotion has to do with affection, whereas discipline makes me think of the Marines.
I make things with devotion. Discipline gets me only so far. Like willpower, discipline can be exhausted. Take a day with bad traffic where the computer server goes down, throw in an inconsiderate co-worker or some other meanie and by the time you get home any willpower to work out or make a meal from scratch is gone. It was used up by the effort not to drop kick the computer across the room.
Whereas devotion, well, even the homeliest art journal page has something endearing about it. I feel warmly toward the most laughable attempt at drawing, the attempt and the effort. So warmly that I want to try again and look forward to it. That's devotion.
